Keystone SD Mountain Coaster

Fun! Faster than a knife fight in a phone booth.

Rating:

3 frosty beers from the fridge out of a six-pack. This fun and adventurous , but not so adventurous that the little ones would be left out. Fun for the outdoor family.

Rush Mountain Adventure Park has a cave tour, a 2 seat zip-line, and a mountain coaster. We were in the area to see Mount Rushmore and this little gem is just a couple of miles away. We have caves at home and the zip line looks safe enough for little kids, so we passed on them and made a bee line to the coaster.

If you have ever thought that roller coasters would be better if no one was controlling it, if just you had control of the breaks, then this is for you! "Breaks, we don't need no stinking breaks", Barbra Jean Jo Barbara muttered as the safety lecture began. It turns out, you do! This coaster is spectacular - it is as fast as you want it to be or as fast as the person in front of you wants it to be. You can ride single or tandem, but only one of you gets to control the breaks.

NOTE: If you are strapped in and the person in front of you has been started up the hill, stop the attendant and ask a question that they can't answer with a "yes" or "no". This will give the person in front of you extra distance and allow you to go as fast as you like down the hill.

From the first steep incline, through the rush of the pigtail turns, to the thrill of the downhill, you’ll experience a whole new level of roller coaster fun! You are on your own.

It is a roller coaster that features one and two person carts that are connected to rails that silently wind through the trees and over the mountainside. The individually controlled carts of the mountain coaster have been designed to reach high speeds with tight, exhilarating turns.  If you are a daredevil, you can go all out and reach top speeds, but if you are the nervous type, you can pull back on the brake, control the speed and experience Black Hills vistas in a whole new way.

Barbra Jean Jo Barbara and Randy Randerson would have preferred a side by side race down the mountain to prove who is the fastest, but since Barbra Jean Jo Barbara calls Randy Randerson "Speedy Gonzales",... wait, she has been calling him that for years, it may not be related to the coaster,.. never mind.

You are given a helmet and instructions before getting on the coaster and even more instructions once you are strapped in. The ride is smooth and fun but only a little scary. There are plenty of small children that ride it and seem to be fine after and you can blame one of them if your seat is wet when you get to the bottom of the hill.

Tip:

Warning to RVs - there are terribly steep roads to get to Rush Mountain. There is 15% steep grade coming from keystone and that is a white knuckle experience in an RV.

Take I-90 to 16a to Rushmore. Ignore google maps and keep on 16a. Is truck route and no issues for RVs.
