Big River Steampunk Festival, Hannibal MO

Take one for the steam.

We had never done anything like this before, but this was cooler than the other side of the pillow! We love being around creative people and these are some of the most creative people we have ever seen. The Big River Steampunk Festival is held each Labor Day weekend and features events, contests and amazing performances that take place throughout historic downtown Hannibal Missouri.

Different than other Steampunk or Cosplay conventions held in large hotels, this festival provides the opportunity to immerse yourself completely in the Victorian era as you stroll along the pedestrian-only Main Street in the authentic 1840s town with the buildings just as Mark Twain saw them as a young boy (it's all pretend people). Put on your cosplay "Steam Persona" or just come as yourself and relive the days of steamboats, steam trains, and the romance of the Victorian era along the western shore of the mighty Mississippi River! Go in costume or just go to see it, it is one of the largest Steampunk festivals in the US.

What to bring

You do not have to come in costume but if you do, then pack some repair items, needle and thread, glue, etc, and comfortable footwear. You will certainly reach your goal in steps because this is a pedestrian event only (with the exception of the giant wheeled bike). If you have little ones, we recommend taking some time dressing up a wagon in the theme of your costume.

Bring your seance of humor and a vivid imagination because you will see some of the most creative one of a kind costumes anywhere. You will want a fully charged phone and lots of camera storage space.

Bring cash for food, drinks, and vendor merchandise.

Parking

If you have a car, you will be ushered to the closest lot. If you are in a RV, you should park by the B&B Theater. Very large lot and you can park next to the Levy for camping.

Where to eat

There are many vendors providing food and drink and several restaurants right on Main street to enjoy, but we found a place a short walk away from Main street that was wonderful! The LaBinnah Bistro (Hannibal backwards) is a wonderful little place with the flavor of the region and some of the best steaks we have had, and being in the mid-west that says a lot!

Hannibal Missouri

Hannibal Missouri is the perfect setting for this annual event. Its authentically Victorian and was a major center of commerce during the Industrial Revolution with steamboats, steam powered trains, and scientists and inventors who patented dozens of gadgets. Historic Main Street is the perfect backdrop for Steampunkers to portray their personas of the 19th century, and the beautiful Victorian homes throughout the historic districts inspire the right sense of time and place.
